Keeping it Real

When life gets you down

by Dionna Sanchez

Have you ever had one of THOSE days? Surely you have. We all have. Those days when for whatever reasons, from the moment you wake up till the moment you go to bed – things just go – wrong.

I’m not sure why some days are like this but I hate it when they come around my way.

I had one of THOSE days recently. And I found myself feeling a little depressed because of the events that unfolded on that particular day. And then I recognized that I felt depressed. I was unmotivated and unproductive. I was letting the day win.

It seems to me that when we have a bad day or when things just seem to go plain wrong in our lives, that we can either learn something from it and dig deep inside to find something to be happy about, or we can let it ruin our attitude, our focus, and our ability to find joy amidst adversity.

We have to know that not every day in our lives will be a great one. So how do we handle it? Do we act like spoiled little children or do we brace ourselves for the winds that may come and decide to make the best of it?

I admire those people who can take life by the horns…both the good and the bad and just deal with it without letting it overcome and overtake them. I want to be that kind of person, even though I struggle to not get down and out when things beat me down.

Life is life. The good, the bad, the fun, the sad. All of it is part of our life. We can learn from all of it, grow from all of it and let all of it become a part of who we are. We just need to keep things in perspective.

Thankfully, when I realized I was letting something unfortunate in my day ruin every single moment of the rest of my day, I vowed to change at that exact moment. I decided to “be strong and courageous” and make the most of things. Making that decision completely changed my whole countenance.

We can’t control life. Things happen. It’s just a matter of how you will act or react to them when they do.
