Mom Writers Who Have Something To Say
December 2007
Editor's Note...
What a year! MWLM celebrated two years
online and the arrival of our first print issues. We're wrapping up 2007
with gratitude and bliss. We love what we do and it seems like you do
too. Onward to 2008 with pen in hand, excited to see what stories wait
to be read and told in the New Year.
Driving in my neighborhood, I see the white holiday lights wrapped
around palm trees and I revisit all there is to do between Thanksgiving
and the Super Bowl (then Valentine's Day, and more class parties). I try
not to let
the Mommy duties deplete the joy I am supposed to be feeling this time
of year. Then the holiday-colored bulb goes off in my head; it's a dance
of joy and responsibility. I can do it somewhat gracefully by now, if I
remember to
breathe, to write, and remember what time the turkey went in the oven.
Even though I started buying presents months ago, I have forgotten where
I have hid them and will not see them again until a) we move out of this
house or b) the kids pack up for college and are no longer attached to
Bert &
Ernie. I do the same thing with my writing. I randomly find poems or
manuscript outlines in different parts of the house. They resurface when
they want to be found. Manuscript or shiny new toy wrapped with curled
ribbon, it's all the same.
It's clear at moments like that – the thrill of an unexpected discovery
– that writing is a gift we give to ourselves. It isn't seasonal, we
don't have to wait for it to go on sale, and it doesn't dry out if we
forget about it in the oven. Writing keeps on giving – a dance we do, a
game we play.
Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for 2008!
Yours,

Samantha Gianulis

Our Feature Cover Story for MWLM
Mom Writer Skye Hoppus: Rock
Star Momma on Hip Maternity Fashions
by Kathy Schlaeger
Is it possible for a mom-to-be to look hip
while pregnant? The answer is most definitely. And the recent
book, Rock Star Momma, by Skye Hoppus shows you how it is done.
The book is an honest girlfriend-to-girlfriend pregnancy guide
and focuses on fashion tips which will help you feel good about
yourself the entire time.
Skye Hoppus describes herself as a mom, wife,
designer, stylist, writer, entrepreneur and real-life rock star
momma. While Skye was a pregnant mom a short time ago (she has a
four-year-old son), she experienced firsthand a gap in the
marketplace for maternity clothing...

Our Profiles
An
interview with
mom author Christina Katz
interviewed by MWLM’s Jackie Papandrew
Christina Katz knows what it’s like to be a mother and a writer.
The author of Writer Mama: How to Raise a Writing Career
Alongside Your Kids, says most of her writing success came about
after she became a wife and mother. The book, which came out in
March 2007 and was published by Writer’s Digest Books, gives
specific advice on developing a freelance writing career while
raising children. There is now a Writer Mama blog and e-zine, as
well. Katz, who has an English degree from Dartmouth College and
an MFA from Columbia College, is not only a writer, but a
teacher and sought-after public speaker. She says she sometimes
struggles with a desire to do too much. She lives in the suburbs
of Portland, OR with her family...

Our Profile
An
interview with
mom author Erica Lyon
interviewed by MWLM’s Jackie Papandrew
Erica Lyon, well-known childbirth educator and founder of the
Realbirth Center in New York, says her two children regard birth
as a normal part of life, a view that she hopes readers of her
book, The Big Book of Birth, will adopt as well. With its
comprehensive guide drawn from Lyon’s many years of experience
teaching expectant parents, the book offers an antidote to the
fear and anxiety that often accompany one of the most
significant events in any woman’s life. Prior to opening
Realbirth in 2003, Lyon taught at Long Island College Hospital,
the New York Foundling Hospital and the Elizabeth Seton
Childbearing Center. Erica lives in New York...

An
interview with mom author
Annie Ruth
interviewed by Kathy Schlaeger
Annie Ruth is an award-winning artist, poet,
illustrator, and author of numerous books, articles and
inspirational commentaries. She uses her positive voice and
spirit to inspire women throughout the United States. In 2002,
she released an inspirational CD entitled Soul of a Sister
and her song “My Sista, My Friend.” Her song is rapidly becoming
an anthem for women’s groups across the country...
An
interview with
mom author
Candace Fleming
interviewed by Amy Halloran
If you are not a fan of children’s
literature, your first encounter with children’s author Candace
Fleming’s work might have been in a cereal box. Small paperback
copies of Muncha, Muncha, Muncha were included in certain
breakfast cereals a few years ago, introducing readers and
eaters to Fleming’s musical sense of language and her great
sense of humor. But Fleming’s work has been impressing the
worlds of kids, librarians and parents for over a decade. Her
breakout picture book was also her first: Madame LaGrande and
Her So High, to the Sky, Uproarious Pompadour, the fictional
story of a French woman whose desire for novelty and fashion
raises her hair to dangerous heights. A master’s degree in
history fuels much of her writing, which is studded with small
moments in time brought to large life. Fleming’s latest chapter
book, The Fabled Fourth Graders of Aesop Elementary School, came
out in August of this year, and also has a strong thread of
hilarity stitching up the storyline. Candace Fleming teaches
writing on occasion in various settings and lives in the Chicago
area...
